Initially the are three helicopters, but it seems like more can be unlocked. To help you select the most suitable chopper, the game rates the various choppers by top speed, rotation, body, and capacity. The capacity translates into the maximum number of rescued victims a chopper can carry at anyone time.

Sad to say, the plot is a feeble amalgamation of concepts that the true impact that could have been presented in the title is lost. The Mantel soldiers are presented as though the have not morality rather the are only interested in killing people because they have always had a thirst for death and destruction.

However, Carpenter isn’t ever presented with these emotions, regardless of the action he faces or the amount of Nectar in his system. This makes him stand out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of his unit and immediately weakens the player’s connection as to why they want to even play through these sections. What’s more, the character of Carpenter doesn’t endear himself to the player, especially because he either whines his way through sections of missions or seems perpetually lost, making him come across as exceedingly weak and not someone you want to take through the entire game regardless of what happens to him. It doesn’t really help in the middle of battle, when you’re dodging bullets or rockets from your former company, to hear Shane complain about not being sure what to do next.

Time will tell whether people will accept Soul Calibur 4 into the pantheon of timeless, classic fighting games, but it is great, plays extremely well, and has counter measures for nearly any perceived exploit you may stumble across. The create-a-character mode is amazing, allowing you to assemble your own bionic man, while the new manga-designed fighters add plenty of fun new looks and personalities to play. The Tower of Lost Souls mode is a much better attraction than Soul Calibur 3 Chronicles of the Sword, as it ditches that game’s real-time-strategy-lite load-a-thon with more straightforward combat challenges.

With the classic, new school, and customizable character roster at the ready, and with online play fully operational, it’s not a stretch to say this might be 2008′s best fighting game. Some other hot fighters, notably Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and Battle Fantasia are on the horizon, but considering how fun Soul Calibur 4 is after times of nonstop play, I think it will be hard to top what Namco’s accomplished with what is unquestionably their best fighting game to date.
